Literacy is the ability to read and write at a level whereby we can effectively understand and use written communication in all media, print and electronic. It is a means of expression and communication, through a variety of media. It includes our ability to understand, evaluate, use and engage with texts, in order to develop our knowledge, potential and participate in society.

We need literacy in order to engage with the written word in everyday life. But beyond the functional level, literacy plays a vital role in transforming us into socially engaged citizens. Being able to read and write means being able to keep up with current events, communicate effectively, and understand the issues that are shaping our world.
